Position Descriptions
Site Coordinator (SC)
The site coordinator is the primary staff person responsible for a group of 12-15 high school students on a weeklong service-learning field study program. Site coordinators execute the daily itineraries for the field study; serve as the main liaison to the host community, parents and the Civic Education Project and Center for Talent Development; plan and facilitate educational activities for students; supervise two residential counselors; and serve as the main program administrator for financial, health and disciplinary matters. Site coordinators are ultimately responsible for the safety and quality of the group’s experience.

Site coordinators are typically teachers or youth development professionals with relevant experience facilitating service-learning or experiential education programs for high school age students. Site coordinators for the CivicWeek for Civic Leadership Institute (CLI) Alumni program should have previous experience with CLI and/or CivicWeek programs.

Site coordinator positions are available only with CivicWeek programs. Site coordinators earn $575 per weeklong session, plus room, board and transportation for the duration of the program and up to $350 of travel reimbursement for travel to and from the program site.

Residential Counselor (RC)

Residential counselors work closely with the site coordinator to help manage a group of 12-15 high school students on a weeklong service-learning field study program. Residential counselors help execute the daily itineraries for the field study; supervise students on volunteer projects and community experiences; assist with planning and facilitating educational activities; supervise students during residential and recreational time; ensure students are aware of and adhere to program rules and policies; build healthy, appropriate relationships with students; help create a sense of community; and otherwise support students’ academic, social and emotional well-being.

Most residential counselors are junior- or senior-level undergraduate students, graduate students or recent college graduates working in the education and nonprofit fields, with a background in service-learning or experiential education and experience working with young people in a residential setting. Residential counselors for the CivicWeek for Civic Leadership Institute (CLI) Alumni program should have previous experience with CLI and/or CivicWeek programs.

Residential counselor positions are available only with CivicWeek programs. Residential counselors earn $350 per weeklong session, plus room, board and transportation for the duration of the program and up to $350 of travel reimbursement for travel to and from the program site.

Commitment and Expectations
CivicWeek programs are quite intense, and all staff positions require a significant commitment. Once hired, staff are expected to spend sufficient time prior to the program reviewing staff handbooks and program materials and preparing activities. CivicWeek staff arrive on site one or two days before the program begins and participate in on-site training prior to student arrival. During the field study week, each day is quite full, and the program moves at a fairly strenuous pace. Because CivicWeek staff live on site with students, all staff positions have 24-hour responsibilities. Following each program, staff may have additional responsibilities for student evaluation, follow-up and documentation.

In order to be successful, all staff should be committed to the goals of the program; attuned to the academic, social and emotional needs of gifted learners; and understanding of the particular challenges of working with students in an intense environment. CivicWeek staff should possess passion, energy, creativity, organizational skills, flexibility, teamwork and the ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and manage stress. Our most successful staff members not only appreciate the intensity of this kind of immersive experience but also thrive within the community it creates.
