Program Offerings

* Residential staff arrive on site the Thursday before the students arrive and depart the site the Saturday after the students leave.
Position Descriptions
Resident Assistant (RA)
Training & Compensation
Residential staff participate in a three-day training session on site prior to student arrival.
In addition to the stipends listed above, residential staff receive room and board throughout the program. Residential staff are responsible for their own travel to and from program sites.
Commitment & Expectations
The Civic Education Project (CEP) summer programs are quite intense, and all staff positions require a significant commitment. Once hired, staff are expected to spend sufficient time prior to the summer reviewing staff handbooks and program and curriculum materials and preparing activities. Residential staff arrive three days before program start dates and participate in a training session prior to student arrival. Once the sessions begin, our programs move at a fairly strenuous pace and can be quite consuming for students and staff alike. All residential staff have 24-hour responsibilities for students. Following each program, staff may have additional responsibilities for student evaluation, follow-up and documentation.
In order to be successful, all staff should be committed to the goals of the program; attuned to the academic, social and emotional needs of gifted learners; and understanding of the particular challenges of working with students in an intense environment. Summer staff should possess passion, energy, creativity, organizational skills, flexibility, teamwork and the ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and manage stress. Our most successful staff members not only appreciate the intensity of this kind of immersive experience but also thrive within the community it creates.

Position Descriptions
Resident Assistant (RA)
As a team, the RAs provide the backbone of the social and recreational aspects of the program and the bridge between the residential community and the classroom. Living in campus dormitories with student participants, RAs are responsible for supervising students during out of class time. They create and plan large-group and small-group activities for students during afternoons, evenings and weekends. They also attend classes on occasion, participate in service projects and communicate frequently with instructional staff. Most RAs are junior- or senior-level undergraduate students, graduate students or recent college graduates with a passion for residential life and/or working with high school students. Ideal RAs have experience working with young people in a residential setting, are creative, have good judgment and are highly responsible. RA positions are available only with the Civic Leadership Institutes. RAs earn $1,300 per three-week session, plus room and board.
