Statement on Discrimination & Harassment

Northwestern University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action educator and employer.

Northwestern University does not discriminate or permit discrimination by any member of its community against any individual on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, parental status, marital status, age, disability, citizenship or veteran status in matters of admissions, employment, housing, or services or in the educational programs or activities it operates.

Harassment, whether verbal, physical or visual, that is based on any of these characteristics is a form of discrimination. This includes harassing conduct affecting tangible job benefits, interfering unreasonably with an individual's academic or work performance or creating what a reasonable person would perceive is an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment.

While Northwestern University is committed to the principles of free inquiry and free expression, discrimination and harassment identified in this policy are neither legally protected expression nor the proper exercise of academic freedom.

For advice or assistance regarding this policy, see the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access web site at: http://www.northwestern.edu/hr/eeo/.

Students & Staff with Disabilities

Students with Disabilities
CTD is pleased to welcome and support a diverse student body in its programs and strives to create an environment that encourages and challenges all students. An academically qualified student with disabilities will be provided with access to accommodations which are consistent with the student’s needs and the essential requirements of the program or course of study in which the student is enrolled. Appropriate services and accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis.

A reasonable accommodation is a modification or adjustment to a course, program, service or activity that enables a qualified student with a disability to obtain equal access. Equal access means an opportunity to attain the same level of performance or to enjoy equal benefits and privileges as are available to a similarly situated student without a disability. Only the peripheral requirements of courses, programs, and activities are subject to modification. Essential elements of courses, programs and activities will remain intact. CTD is obligated to make a reasonable accommodation only for known limitations of otherwise qualified students with disabilities.

In order for decisions to be made regarding the appropriate accommodations for each student, documentation of the disability by a licensed professional that includes resulting limitations and recommended accommodations will be required. You must also disclose any disabilities for which you seek accommodation on a student Health Form. Requests for accommodations should be made as soon as possible after acceptance to the program. Late requests may adversely affect CTD’s ability to provide accommodations by the start of the program.

Staff with Disabilities
Northwestern University reasonably accommodates all employees with disabilities as defined by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other relevant laws. Failure to reasonably accommodate employees with disabilities is a violation of federal/state law and campus policy.

Employees are asked to provide input concerning the accommodation process, however, Northwestern University will determine what constitutes a reasonable accommodation on a case-by-case basis and reserves the right to request additional independent medical examinations, evaluations or other appropriate information.

Disability information is treated as confidential and will be shared with University administrators only on a need-to-know basis. Northwestern University will not provide accommodations without appropriate documentation.

The Office of Equal Opportunity and Access is the administrative office responsible for the management, implementation and coordination of the Disabilities Accommodation Policy. All employment accommodations and/or employment decisions related to disabilities must be approved by Director, Office of Equal Opportunity and Access. Concerns with respect to architectural barriers and building/program disability related modifications also should be directed to the Director, Office of Equal Opportunity and Access.

  • Submission to such conduct is made or threatened to be made, either explicitly or implicitly, a term or condition of an individual’s employment or education; or
  • Submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used or threatened to be used as the basis for academic or employment decisions affecting that individual; or
  • Such conduct has the purpose or effect of substantially interfering with an individual’s academic or professional performance or creating what a reasonable person would perceive is an intimidating, hostile or offensive employment, education, or living environment.
