Project EXCITE Summer Program in Reading and Math

Although Project EXCITE focuses primarily on promoting high achievement in mathematics and science, we also emphasize reading in the early stages of the program. In grades 3 and 4, students can participate in a summer program geared toward solidifying basic math skills and strengthening reading skills as well.

The optional Project EXCITE summer program for students in grades 3 and 4 is set up in stations. Students rotate to different stations and work on skills that the teacher has identified as areas for improvement. The stations include:

Station Description
Guided math Computation, number sense, fractions, decimals, percents, graphs and geometry
Math games Board games and conceptual activities that focus on a weekly math goal
Guided reading Fiction (all genres – mystery, fairy tales, legends, etc.)
Predicting, visualization, making connections, making inferences, asking questions, identifying main ideas and themes, summarizing

Nonfiction
Table of contents, glossary, index, photos, captions, inset, map, charts, tables, locating key terms, using titles and headers to preview text,
literary skills, figurative language (similes, personification, metaphors)
Listening center Fiction and non-fiction books on tape (one to two levels above instructional level with rich vocabulary)
Independent reading Leveled readers, both fiction and non-fiction (partner reading)
Daily read aloud All genres
All genres Special project Nonfiction research projects, oral presentations
