University Credit (grades 10-12)

University Credit online courses give students in grades 10 through 12
  • A great introduction to college while they are still in high school;
  • A cost-effective college-level course taught by a renowned faculty member of Northwestern University, and
  • An opportunity to set their college applications apart from others.
GLL University Credit online courses are developed and led by Northwestern University faculty members who are experts in their fields. These facilitated independent study courses allow students the flexibility to work through intellectually rigorous material and accomplish learning goals at their own pace. Course instructors guide students through the material, providing individualized feedback and facilitating peer interaction through the Northwestern University course management system, Blackboard.

Students are expected to spend between six and eight hours per week on course work. Each University Credit course provides students with Northwestern University credit upon successful course completion (C- or better).

Fall 2011 University Credit Course
Center for Talent Development, in conjunction with the Northwestern University Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences, is proud to debut the following University Credit course for the fall session.

Climate Catastrophes in Earth History: Earth 105

Course Description: We are bombarded with information about fossil fuel use, carbon emissions and global warning daily. Climate change is an important topic, but it has become so highly politicized that the science behind the issues is often omitted or ignored. Consequently, few people really understand how climate works. Fewer still have a deep perspective on the truly astonishing changes Earth's climate went through long before humans arrived. In this course, students learn about the "Snowball Earth," how those sheets of ice happened and perhaps more importantly, what stopped them. How did the Earth get so hot that 90% of its inhabitants died? Could a catastrophe like this happen again? This course provides participants with the opportunity to see how the climate system really works and allows them to answer these questions (and many others) themselves.

Faculty: Adam Murphy holds a BA in Earth Science from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut and a MS and PhD from Northwestern University. At Northwestern University, Murphy had extensive teaching experience with undergraduates in a wide variety of courses. He has also taught physics, chemistry and environmental science at a competitive preparatory school in New York and, most recently, taught geology and environmental science online. He is currently on faculty at Northwestern University.
