Film Critique 6 - 8 Do you want to be the next Ebert or Roeper? There's more to writing a good critique than just telling your reader what you think. As students watch PG-13 rated films, they analyze cinematography, direction, script, actors and theme to create their own movie reviews.

Springboards to Creativity 6 - 8 Have you ever had a short story stay on your mind for days? If so, then you realize the impact that brief, narrative fiction can have. Students use music, photos and film clips as springboards to begin the writing process. Students focus on writing their own short stories, reflective of their growing maturity and expanding knowledge.

Maps, Money & Mayhem: A Pirate's Life for Me! 3 - 5 Pirates created their own society and culture based on their unique lifestyle, economy and code of conduct. Separate truth from myth in tales of treasure and terror as you analyze pirate legends and historical news reports. Investigate how pirates survived at sea for months at a time, recreate legendary trade and treasure routes, and learn how pirates of old steered their ships using only compasses, the wind, and the stars.

Real Urban Legends: The Rise & Fall of American Cities 6 - 8 Using a variety of historical and current records, students consider the lessons that can be extrapolated from the nation's healthiest cities and those that face the most severe challenges. As a final project, students examine their own communities identifying factors that may indicate success, health or stress and propose potential solutions.

Science Fair: Beyond the Scientific Method 3 - 5 Unleash your inner scientist! Engage in weekly, hands-on lab activities! Learn how to control experiments to minimize errors and include thoughtful error analysis. After a series of structured investigations, you’ll move quickly onto labs based on your own inquiry with your instructor as your guide. Throughout the course document and share your work with your peers, wrapping up with a “virtual science fair”!

Theoretical Physics 6 - 8 “The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible.” — Einstein.

Technology Courses - GLL: 2012 Summer Enrichment

Scratching Technology I 3 - 5 Students create their own digital stories, animations, games, music and art with Scratch, a programming language designed to help young people produce rich interactive media. As students explore the design process, they learn important mathematical concepts. Creations are displayed on the Scratch website (with parental permission) and students become a part of a global community of Scratch programmers.

Note: This course serves as the prerequisite to Scratching Technology II.

Introduction to Latin I 4 - 6 “Latin … helps create curious, intellectually rigorous kids with a rich interior world, people who have the tools to see our world as it really is because they have encountered…another that is so like, and so very unlike, our own.” — Charlotte Higgins, author of Latin Love Lessons.

Through a variety of engaging exercises and games, students are introduced to Latin vocabulary and grammar. Participants are challenged to complete translations while exploring ancient mythology and society. As students study Latin, they become better at deducing the meanings of English words, enhancing their vocabulary in both Latin and English.
