Education Program for Gifted Youth

In conjunction with its Gifted LearningLinks online learning program, Center for Talent Development (CTD) offers students the opportunity to participate in computer-based mathematics and language arts courses developed and administered by Stanford University’s Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY). Four of the courses are post-high school classes carrying three to four academic credits each from Stanford.



Courses
Students in EPGY courses use computers to access multimedia lectures that are followed by exercises in which students answer questions. Stanford provides instructors’ names, student ID numbers and passwords to enrolled students via e-mail a few days prior to the beginning of each course. The e-mail also instructs students to go through an orientation process to obtain relevant technical information and data. Regardless of your previous comfort level with computers, you’ll be learning online in no time!



Faculty
EPGY instructors have a thorough knowledge of their subject areas as well as expertise in using technology to provide advanced instruction to gifted students. Instructors monitor student progress, review student assignments and help address particular student difficulties. They are also available for instructional support by phone, e-mail and virtual classroom. To ensure success, students should be in constant electronic contact with their assigned instructors.


Technology
All EPGY courses are web-based except for the university-level mathematics course, which is CD-ROM- and web-based. EPGY courses run on computers with Windows XP or Macintosh OS X 10 3/4. Computers must have browsers that support Flash and Java plug-ins. The university math classes require Windows. Textbooks are required for some of the university math classes, but not for Introduction to Logic. The K-7 courses do not use textbooks.


Expectations
Students should expect to spend anywhere from two to eight hours per week on a course, depending on the age of the student and the level of the course.



Schedule
EPGY courses begin on the first of each month throughout the year and initial enrollment is for three months. Registration and payment must be received at least one month prior to the desired start date. Stanford unit credit classes begin on the first of each month and must be completed within six months.  The Expository Writing courses are on a fixed course schedule.  Please refer to the EPGY course calendar for scheduled dates.



Course Fees
The fee for elementary and high school level EPGY courses is $545 per course per three-month quarter. The fee for the Stanford unit credit fixed-term classes is between $605 and $790 per course. The fee includes tuition and registration. Full payment for the first quarter of study is due at the time of application. Please note that students who are interested in financial aid must apply for both admission and financial aid through Stanford directly.

Course Continuation
Students are notified via e-mail when their quarter of study is ending. At that time, students who have not completed their course may elect to continue it for an additional payment of $165 per month.

Course Acceleration
Upon completing an EPGY course, students may proceed to the next level of study. If this occurs before the end of the quarter, students pay only a $50 fee, payable to Center for Talent Development, to begin the new course. If this occurs at the start of a new quarter, the full fee of $545 is charged.
