Student Role & Responsibilities

Online learning provides students with the flexibility to schedule study time around other academic and personal commitments. With this flexibility comes responsibility, so it is important for Gifted LearningLinks (GLL) students to be highly motivated, independent learners.

Expectations of Students
To be successful in a GLL course, students should:
  • devote the appropriate amount of time per week to study for their courses;
  • follow the course syllabus and complete all course requirements;
  • plan ahead to meet all assignment and test deadlines;
  • participate, whenever possible, in real-time group and class activities;
  • behave as they would in a face-to-face classroom, following rules of online etiquette (i.e., “netiquette”);
  • act with honesty and personal integrity in all of their academic work (e.g., assignments, papers, labs and assessments) and social interactions and
  • contact the instructor with questions and concerns.

Recommendations for Parents
To facilitate student success, parents, guardians and/or teachers can:
  • acquire necessary texts and/or supplies (you can check course material requirements at the Center For Talent Development Bookstore - http://bookstore.mbsdirect.net/ctd.htm)
  • help students understand that it may take a week or two to acclimate to the course format;
  • assist students with technology issues unrelated to Blackboard and
  • remind students to communicate with instructors regularly.

Academic Integrity and Performance Issue Policies
Performance issues will be resolved in the following ways:
  • Instructor and student will confer.
  • Instructor will contact the parent(s), guardian(s) and/or in-school counselor, as appropriate.
  • Gifted LearningLinks staff will arrange a conference with appropriate parties.
Consequences for academic dishonesty may include grade reduction or a failing grade in courses taken for credit.

Chronic performance problems unresolved by the above measures may warrant dismissal from the program. If CTD dismisses a student from a Gifted LearningLinks course, CTD will enter a grade of “W”, for Withdrawn, for that course on the student’s transcript.
