About Us

Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS) is a way to identify kids that need more Why do we do what we do?
Not every school system has a plan in place to serve gifted/talented students. And for those that do, it may not be enough for the very brightest kids.

Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS) is a way to identify kids who need more. Not only does NUMATS provide access to above grade-level tests, but it also gives parents a roadmap of which classes, extracurricular activities and enrichment programs will benefit their gifted child the most. The mission of NUMATS is to help these bright kids develop the self-confidence, exposure and skills they need to have a positive academic experience.

The Midwest Talent Search, based on the Johns Hopkins University talent search, began in 1981 How long have we been doing it?
Northwestern University's Midwest Academic Talent Search, modeled after the Johns Hopkins University talent search, began in 1981. During those first few years, about 1,000 students in grades 6 through 8 were tested each year, and from there the program started growing. For more than two decades we’ve seen that participating in a talent search helps parents and schools find the right academic path for their child, and gives kids a better way to explore their talent.

Over the years, NUMATS as become so accepted as an important tool for identifying the brightest kids that now more than 30,000 students register through NUMATS each year How well do we do it?
We think we’re really good at what we do. And other people think so, too. Over the years, NUMATS has become so accepted as an important tool for identifying the brightest kids that now more than 30,000 students register through NUMATS each year.

NUMATS empowers teachers and parents to provide gifted students with more than just the basics. As a result, these kids not only work up to their potential; they blossom.

Our staff has years of experience, not just with NUMATS but also with other Center for Talent Development (CTD) programs Who are we, anyway?
Our staff has years of experience, not just with NUMATS but also with other Center for Talent Development (CTD) programs. Many are former teachers. Our liaisons throughout the Midwest have helped schools design educational and support programs for talent search students; have worked with parent groups, other educational and state organizations, and institutions of higher education involved in gifted education; and are aware of local community needs.

All are here to help parents and educators provide the best opportunities and challenges for these promising young students.
