With help from Mr. Ketteson, Houston Students Attend CTD Equinox Program

With a generous grant from James Kettleson, a member of the Board of Trustees of Northwestern University and alum (1952), ten talented students from Houston, Texas, attended the Equinox Summer Program at the Center for Talent Development. The ten scholars were identified by their schools as qualified for the Equinox program. The students spent three weeks on the Evanston campus in July, living in University housing with other talented high school students and taking an advanced high school or college-level course.
The grant money is part of a program Mr. Kettleson started in the Houston public schools. The project, called Project GRAD —"Graduation Really Achieves Dreams", focuses on increasing the number of minority students who graduate from high school and go on to complete college degrees and combines resources between schools and their communities. The program works with elementary and middle school students to improve achievement in the areas of math, writing and reading. Other components of Project GRAD include consistency management, a program to create supportive, orderly classroom environments in the middle schools and a drop out prevention program. The capstone to Project GRAD is the scholarships extended to all the students who meet proscribed academic requirements. Project GRAD has also been implemented in school districts in Atlanta, Columbus, Nashville and Newark.
The Houston students took classes such as AP Economics, Social Theory and Problem Solving and Advanced Creative Writing. Students in Social Theory traveled to Boston to work for a week, learning about issues associated with HIV/AIDS through volunteer work. Students also enjoyed day trips into the city of Chicago including excursions to Ravinia, Navy Pier and Second City.
