PreK-3rd Grade Testing Program

  • PreK-3rd Grade Testing Program FAQs
  • CTD requires and offers testing for students in Pre-K - grade 1 who are applying for SEP and who do not have other available test scores. Comparable evaluations by a school psychologist may be used, provided that achievement scores in the areas of mathematics and language arts are included.
  • Students in grades 2-3 who do not have test scores, have the option of being tested through CTD.
  • The purpose of the CTD evaluation is to screen for admission into the program. It is not a general psychological evaluation and the results should not be used as such. Students must be at least four years old but not beyond the third grade to be evaluated.
  • The CTD evaluation consists of achievement tests in: letter and reading recognition; early mathematics; general information; and tests of abstract logical reasoning ability, fine motor coordination, and abstract representation. Please refer to the PreK-3rd Grade Testing Program portion of our website for more specific information.
  • The evaluation process takes approximately one hour and is conducted by a CTD test consultant. Parents receive a verbal and written report of their child's test results.
  • Testing is available on Saturdays, if necessary. For test appointments, contact CTD at (847) 491-3850 or ctd-testing@northwestern.edu. There is a $110 evaluation fee, payable at the time of testing. Cancellation of an appointment must be made at least 24 hours in advance or a $20 fee will be assessed.

What is the purpose of the PreK-3rd Grade testing program? Location?
All applicants applying to our educational programs must provide evidence of their ability to succeed in the program. Any child from age 4 through grade 3 may be evaluated through this program. Since most preschool and kindergarten children (and some 1st to 3rd graders) have not yet had the opportunity to take standardized achievement tests in school, CTD has developed a testing program for your convenience.

Testing is performed on Northwestern University's Evanston campus, and we also have testing opportunities available in Naperville and Gurnee. Our test consultants are trained in the principles of testing and they are familiar with CTD's programs.

Contact CTD at (847) 491-3850 or ctd-testing@northwestern.edu to schedule an appointment.

Does my child have to be evaluated through CTD in order to apply to its programs?
No. In general, our program entrance requirements call for achievement (not IQ) scores. If your child has taken tests either through his or her school or with another qualified tester that yield similar achievement results, you may include a copy of those results with your application.

How old must my child be to be tested through this program?
Children must be at least 4 years of age. In addition, we recommend that parents wait until their preschool children are showing some familiarity with letters and numbers, since a major portion of the test battery will test achievement in these areas.

What kind of evaluation is preformed?

The PreK-3rd Grade Testing Program is NOT a complete cognitive or psychological assessment. Instead, we administer a limited number of tests that allow us to measure the child's readiness for participation in CTD classes. The following tests are administered:

Ravens Colored Progressive Matrices
(based on comparing geometric puzzle shapes)

Peabody Individual Achievement Test-Revised, or PIAT-R (measures achievement in math, reading and general information)

Goodenough Draw A Person Test (measures mental representation skills and use of pencil or crayons)

In addition, a special inventory measures children's cooperation and attentiveness, their ability to separate from a parent and interact with the unfamiliar examiner, and their social adeptness and ability to hold their own in an adult conversation.

How long does the evaluation take?
It lasts for about one hour.

Can a parent watch?
No. After the testing consultant introduces him/herself to the parent(s) and the child, the child will be asked to remain in the testing room with the tester. The parent(s) is close by in another room completing a parent inventory form while the child is being tested.

What is the cost?
The cost of testing is $110 and payment is due at the time of testing. Payment in the form of a check or money order should be made payable to the Center for Talent Development. Exact location that may include maps and parking permits are furnished along with a letter confirming the testing appointment. Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a $25 cancellation fee.

When do we receive the results?
The test consultant will discuss the results with the parent(s) immediately after the testing is completed. A written assessment of the test scores and recommendation will follow usually within 2 weeks.
