The goal of the Center for Talent Development’s Summer Program is to foster intellectual and social growth in a safe and engaging environment. We take every reasonable step to ensure the safety and well-being of Apogee students, including the following:
Parents also receive the Summer Program Family Handbook, with additional safety and conduct information, upon their child’s acceptance to the Apogee program.
Exceptional Educators and Staff
Apogee educators and residential staff are selected through a highly competitive process that weighs such factors as academic background, experience, enthusiasm and ability to respond to the needs of our students. Our staff members are exceptional individuals brought together by a commitment to educating and inspiring gifted young people.
Smooth Drop-off/Pick-up Transitions
Commuter counselors meet students at the drop-off location, take attendance and escort them to their assigned classrooms, ensuring a friendly welcome each day. These same counselors walk with students from the classrooms to the pick-up location and monitor the area until all children are safely returned to the care of a parent or designated caregiver. The drop-off/pick-up location and times, as well as other commuter details, are provided in the Family Handbook.
Proper Supervision
Apogee students are supervised by Summer Program staff at all times. Our trained faculty and staff teams provide clear conduct guidelines and careful supervision. Additionally, all students are coached in safety procedures, such as always staying with their group, using emergency phones on campus when necessary and dialing the emergency phone numbers printed on the back of student identification cards, which students carry with them at all times.
Inside the classroom, Apogee participants thrive in an organized, comfortable environment and benefit from a high student to staff ratio. Apogee courses are limited to 18 students, and each class has both a teacher and a teaching assistant. Administrative staff provides added supervision during field trips.
High Standards for Student Conduct
In order to maintain a safe and inviting learning environment, all Summer Program participants must adhere to the Center for Talent Development (CTD) Honor Code. The Honor Code establishes standards and expectations for student behavior and reflects CTD’s commitment to fostering character development, integrity and respect for diversity.
The Family Handbook includes detailed information about the CTD Honor Code and additional Summer Program rules and policies. These rules help to ensure the safety of our students and staff, and all students who attend must be committed to respecting them.
Attention to Student Health
CTD staff keeps health information about each participant. In the case of a minor illness, the on-campus health center is staffed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and nurses and doctors are always on-call and available for questions. Students with serious illness or injuries will be taken immediately to the emergency room at a nearby hospital, and Summer Program staff members will notify parents. Families are responsible for all health costs incurred by their children during the program. The Summer Program's specific health policies and procedures are detailed in the Family Handbook.

The Center for Talent Development (CTD) at Northwestern University is committed to protecting the privacy rights of any child and specifically those rights as outlined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
