Residential Life

Nearly all Equinox participants (approximately 85-90% each year) choose to live on Northwestern's campus during their three-week course. Living and learning together 24 hours a day, seven days a week builds a camaraderie rarely experienced before college. Bonding over late-night study sessions, early-morning runs to the beach and weekend trips into the city do more than foster friendships; they facilitate tolerance, appreciation for diversity and increased awareness of the cultures, issues and assets of the world at large.

Equinox residents are assigned housing based on the courses they are taking. They live with classmates in air conditioned Northwestern University residence halls under the supervision of specially trained residential teaching staff. Male and female students share floors, but they have separate bathrooms. Students eat with residential staff and other members of the University community in a residence hall dining room.

A Residential Coordinator oversees the residential staff, activities, health and social issues. In the residence halls, each residential teaching assistant is responsible for a group of approximately 18 students. The Equinox staff plans and supervises activities both on- and off-campus for after-class, evening, and weekend hours.

Activities
Activities are an important part of the Equinox experience, and they provide a healthy balance of work and play. After class, students may participate in a wide variety of afternoon and evening activities. Favorites include the beach, playing capture the flag, visiting the Northwestern University Student Center, joining pick-up soccer games, and trips to local museums and temples. Equinox students can also sign out for walking trips to downtown Evanston with friends.

Weekends find students enjoying a broad range of activities, such as off- and on-campus theater, concerts, movies, sporting events, dances and talent shows. The learning that occurs outside of class, through casual conversation and these shared activities, can be just as important as what occurs in class. For this reason, we encourage students to remain with the Summer Program throughout each session, including weekends and holidays.

Health Services
The Summer Program fee covers basic health services for residential students. Students who require more extensive assistance are taken to a nearby hospital. The residential fee covers clinic services; it does not provide for medical insurance coverage. Families are responsible for all hospital fees incurred by their children.

All Summer Program participants should be covered by a major medical insurance policy. In the event that a family does not have medical insurance, families are responsible for any medical fees incurred by their students.

Computers
Equinox students have access to two shared computers and two shared printers in the residence hall. Students are encouraged to bring their own computer and printer with them while attending Equinox. Access will be given to the Northwestern wireless system on the first day of student residence.  Please note that Center for Talent Development does not provide technical support for personal computers.
