Residential Life

Residence Halls
Students who wish to live on campus during their Spectrum experience reside in an air-conditioned Northwestern University residence hall under the supervision of specially trained residential staff. Male and female students are always housed in different areas by gender, and restrooms are also gender-specific. Students eat their meals with residential staff and other members of the University community in a campus dining hall.

A residential coordinator oversees the residential staff, activities, health and social issues. In the residence hall, each residential assistant is responsible for a group of approximately 12 to 14 students. The Spectrum staff plans and supervises activities both on- and off-campus.

Activities
Activities are an important part of the Spectrum experience, and they provide a healthy balance of work and play. After class, students may participate in a wide variety of afternoon and evening activities. Favorites include visiting the beach and swimming in Lake Michigan, playing capture the flag, visiting the Northwestern University Student Center, participating in Ultimate Frisbee and soccer games, and engaging in various crafts. Quiet time is an option for those students who wish to study or relax with friends.

The weekend finds students enjoying a broad range of activities including off-campus excursions to places like museums, zoos, cultural centers and sporting events. Examples of on-campus activities include socials, movies, museums, and talent shows. The learning that occurs outside of class, through casual conversation and these shared activities, is just as important as that which occurs in class. For this reason, we encourage residential students to remain with the Spectrum program throughout the session, including weekends and holidays.

Computers
Because of heavy demand, access to public-use computers and campus computer labs is limited. Residential students are encouraged to bring their own laptops and printers while attending CTD to assist them with their coursework. Because of the short duration of the program, neither CTD nor Northwestern University provides technical support, including email or internet accounts, for personal computers.

Health Services
The Summer Program fee covers basic health services for residential students. Students who require more extensive assistance are taken to a nearby hospital. The residential fee covers basic clinic services; it does not provide for medical insurance coverage. Families are responsible for any health service and hospital fees incurred by their child.

All Summer Program participants should be covered by a major medical insurance policy. In the event that a family does not have medical insurance, families are responsible for any medical fees incurred by their student.
