Safety & Conduct
The goal of the Center for Talent Development’s Summer Program is to foster intellectual and social growth in a safe and engaging environment. We take every reasonable step to ensure the safety and well-being of Spectrum students, including:
For additional safety and conduct information, please refer to the Summer Program Family Handbook, included with each Spectrum acceptance packet.
Exceptional Educators and Staff
Spectrum educators and residential staff are selected through a highly competitive process that weighs such factors as academic background, experience, enthusiasm and ability to respond to the needs of our students. Our staff is an exceptional group of individuals brought together by a commitment to educating and inspiring gifted young people.
Smooth Drop-off/Pick-up Transitions
All commuters are dropped off and picked up at a central location monitored by Center for Talent Development (CTD) staff members. Students walk in pairs or with a CTD staff member between the drop-off/pick-up location and their classes.
Proper Supervision
Our trained faculty and staff teams provide clear conduct guidelines and careful supervision. Spectrum students must be with a buddy any time they leave the dorm. Off-campus, a CTD staff member accompanies Spectrum students. Additionally, all students are coached in safety procedures, including using emergency phones on campus when necessary and dialing the emergency phone numbers printed on the back of student identification cards, which students carry with them at all times.
Inside the classroom, Spectrum participants enjoy comfortable classroom facilities and benefit from a high staff to student ratio. Spectrum courses are limited to 18 students, and each class has both a teacher and a teaching assistant.
High Standards for Student Conduct
In order to maintain a safe and inviting learning environment, all Summer Program participants must adhere to the Center for Talent Development (CTD) Honor Code. The Honor Code establishes standards and expectations for student behavior and reflects CTD’s commitment to fostering character development, integrity and respect for diversity.
The Family Handbook includes detailed information about the CTD Honor Code and additional Summer Program rules and policies. These rules help to ensure the safety of our students and staff, and all students who attend must be committed to respecting them..
Attention to Student Health
CTD staff keeps health information about each participant on hand at all times. In the case of a minor illness, the on-campus health center is staffed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and nurses and doctors are always on-call and available for questions. Students with serious illness or injuries will be taken immediately to the emergency room at a nearby hospital, and Summer Program staff members will notify parents immediately. Families are responsible for all health costs incurred by their children during the program.
