Activity/Lab - We began the day finally getting a chance to try out our hot air balloons.  The "launcher" heated the air inside the balloon ... and since hot air is less dense than cold air, the balloon should rise.  Each balloon rose significantly -- some over five stories high!  Back inside, we collected data for use in a position-time graph.

Trying out the launcher for the first time.

Balloon name: Color Blind.

Color Blind rose and began to collapse mid-air!

Balloon name: Hippie.

The Hippie rose!

Balloon name: High Flyer.

It rose and returned to earth 50 meters away from the launcher (it was clear which way the wind was blowing).

Balloon name: Pink Panther.

Pink Panther accelerated from the launcher ...

.. and rose!

Balloon name: The Eye.

The Eye accelerated from the launcher ...

.. and rose!

Setting up data table and distances.

Setting the Stomper car to high speed ...

...placing the car at the start line ...

... and collecting position and time data.

Building Project - We built balsa wood gliders today!

Shaping the balsa wood into an airfoil.

Finish sanding the wing.

Glueing and supporting the dihedral wings.

Test flights outside.

Gliders rose 2 to 3 stories high and came back to the ground in a circular path.

Ready for another launch!
