Students will read and translate Latin passages from Caesar and Vergil, in Latin and in English, and discuss literary and grammatical features within the social, cultural, historical, and/or political context of the period, in preparation for the College Board's AP Latin Exam, May 12th, 2020.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
a. Know: how to read, understand, translate, and analyze both Latin poetry and prose by authentic authors.
b. Understand: how the author composes, organizes & structures the Latin to embody a theme using meter, grammar & figures of speech; how the author’s life, especially his education and relationship with the political leaders of the time, affects his writing style; what the Latin text tells us about Roman culture; how the lines of poetry are broken down grammatically and metrically; what the difference is between a literal and figurative translation.
c. Be able to: apply and strengthen knowledge of basic grammar learned in beginning Latin, increase their vocabulary, learn and identify figures of speech in Latin and in English, analyze the dactylic hexameter meter and increase their general knowledge of scansion, write essays in English analyzing and referring to the Latin text, outline and analyze Roman History, translate literally and identify approximately 1500 lines of Latin, and outline and analyze the Latin text.
Prerequisites: Latin III: Wheelock or Latin III: Ecce Romani/Literature, or instructor’s permission
