The history books have told us of Rosa Parks’s courageous refusal to give up her seat on the bus to a white man, but did you know she wasn’t the first civil rights activist to do so? Indeed, months before Parks’s protest, it was 15-year-old Claudette Colvin who was the first Black person to refuse to give up her seat on the bus, yet few people know her name. Who and what else have been left out of modern history books? Using primary and secondary sources, this course will explore recent historical events and the people who made contributions to these significant moments, but who have been overlooked, unacknowledged, or misunderstood.

Introduction to Latin (4-6)

Winter
Course Information:

Welcome to the Center for Talent Development’s Introduction to Latin course!  This is a 6-week, asynchronous, flexibly paced course within the Online Enrichment Program. Students should expect 2-5 hours of course work per week.

In this class, students dive into the foundational language of Latin as well as the curious realm of Ancient Rome!  Students who love puzzles and logic will enjoy translating this case-inflected language through our textbooks, Minimus: Starting Out in Latin and Minimus Secundus: Moving on in Latin.  In addition, students will explore interesting, and sometimes unusual, qualities of Roman daily life that still impact modern societies today!  Topics will include Roman culture, religious practices and customs, food, chariot-racing, art and architecture, and more!

The Intro to Latin curriculum has three levels: level one, two, and three and is designed to be completed flexibly, according to the needs of each student.  At the beginning each quarter, students will have access to all three levels of the curriculum within the Schoology course. They may complete each level quarterly or advance as far as they wish in the six-week term.  In the following quarter, the instructor will work with each student to pick-up where they left off in the curriculum and begin form there.   By the conclusion of this course and all three levels, students will be prepared to take CTD’s Latin I Honors course, earning high school credit.

Course Information:

This is a 1 credit equivalent, flexibly paced, asynchronous Honors course within the Online Honors Program. Students can expect 6-8 hours of coursework per week and have 14-18 weeks to complete the course depending on start date. Session dates: January 24 - May 15, 2024.

This course exposes students to how psychological research is utilized by medical and health professionals.  Students will investigate the various methods psychologists utilize to answer research questions related to the prevention and treatment of illness and become acquainted with many of the most significant findings in the fields of behavioral medicine and health psychology. The course emphasizes thinking critically about the interdisciplinary fields that focus on the biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that are relevant to the scientific study of health, well-being, and illness and how these impact prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. The medical field has become increasingly interdisciplinary in recent years, and this is reflected in the exam content of the MCAT exam for admission to medical school.  One of the four sections of the MCAT exam involves the psychological, social, and biological foundations of behavior that includes a focus on both psychology and sociology.
