How can an animal's movement influence the robot designs of tomorrow?

How might the slowest mammal on the planet - the three-toed sloth - inspire engineers to develop an efficient weather monitoring robot? For ages, engineers and designers have found inspiration in the movement and physiology of animals. Using the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 set, follow the engineering design process from start to finish through a series of robotics projects inspired by nature. Investigate traits that give animals their amazing abilities, such as the speed of a hummingbird's wings, and apply that research to build robots that mimic what we see in nature. Hone programming skills and develop problem-solving prowess while testing your creativity.

Advanced Reading & Writing: Informational Texts and Using Sources (5-6)

Online
|
January 15, 2020 - March 19, 2020

More books about vampires and dystopian societies? What about real, authentic events and issues from history and today?

Additionally, recognizing, using and citing reliable, respectable sources is more important than ever. In this course, students will practice researching, reading and thinking like scientists and historians while simultaneously analyzing vocabulary and text structure.

Different units within the course include analyzing scientific articles, scientific tables & graphs, historical primary and secondary sources, and current events.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

Without details, Little Red Riding Hood would have just been a girl in a coat. Without plot, we may have never known what happened to the Three Little Pigs. Details and plot make the story and illustrate its theme, a theme which illuminates the point the author is sharing with the audience. In this course, students will master the importance of such details and plot, learning not only how to identify them, but to explain their significance to a story and its outcome. While students will meet these objectives, the most important goal of this course is to foster a love of reading that students will continue for their lifetime.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will know how to:

  • Refer to details and examples in a text directly and indirectly
  • Determine the theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in a text
  • Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of the text, identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions and directions in the text

Android App Design (6-8)

Online
|
January 15, 2020 - March 19, 2020
Online

Create applications and games for Android-based devices while learning key concepts in computer programming.  Explore the world of mobile applications not as a user, but as a creator.  Using App Inventor, a programming language with a drag & drop interface similar to Scratch, develop your own original apps and mobile games and then test them on your Android phone.  This course is intended for students who have had previous experience with a programming language or are serious-minded programmers comfortable with understanding logic for reading and writing code.  This class will offer further opportunities to master those skills by applying them in the mobile applications environment.

IMPORTANT: Android phone is strongly recommended.   Android tablets are acceptable; however, they do not support certain features that will be covered in the class.

Biomimicry occurs when people use ideas found in nature to create solutions. Scientists at CalTech noticed the way schools of fish forcefully moved water with their fins. Based on the movements of the water, these scientists created a system of air flow to build better wind farms. Student scientists, engineers, and designers identify an everyday problem and then take cues from nature to design a solution. Through research, low-tech prototyping, and a group-based review process, students challenge their creativity and bolster their design thinking skills in order to solve problems in this course.

Young people often believe that they can’t make a difference. That they don’t have the knowledge, skills, or capacity to influence issues like poverty, healthcare, education, or the environment. That they’re powerless to create change. Yet there are countless stories that prove this is not the case. Thousands of young people powered the peaceful protests that ended legal segregation in the U.S., and have been instrumental in movements for democracy and human rights around the world. Teenagers have started international campaigns against child labor and fought for the education of girls in the developing world. And those are just a few examples.

What power, passion, and resources do you possess? Begin your discovery at the Civic Leadership Institute!

CLI students explore the complex challenges that affect our communities and develop the knowledge, experience, and leadership skills they need to make a positive impact on the world.

The course will conclude with students writing their own myth or modernization of an ancient myth!

Climate Detectives: The Science of Climate Change (3-5)

Online
|
January 15, 2020 - March 19, 2020
Online

According to NPR, 4 out of 5 parents want climate change to be taught in schools.

Explore how our use of energy affects the earth, especially our climate and the role of greenhouse gases.  Plotting our carbon footprints and tracing the energy used to create and maintain our lifestyles helps us understand our relationship to our environment. Will scientists be able to predict what our future climate will be like by looking at the past? We will investigate how climate scientists study our world.

Lake Forest, IL
|
July 20, 2020 - July 24, 2020
|
1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

An algorithm is a step-by-step process to complete a task. Students use coding apps like Scratch Jr and Cato’s Hike to program their own algorithms. Away from the screen, collaborative projects, such as following a recipe or pitching a tent, challenge students to create algorithms in many different symbolic languages. As students are challenged to take what they learned in one domain and represent those concepts in another domain, they expand their computational thinking skills and produce work that is more complex, detailed, and creative.

SUBJECT AREA: Technology, Computer Science & Engineering

The first half-day class is $345, and each additional half-day class is $310.

The first all-day class is $670, and each additional all-day class is $570.

Open enrollment classes are $275.

Computational thinking requires decomposition, the ability to take an idea and break it down into smaller parts for deeper understanding and analysis. In this course, students create coding projects using Hopscotch and then explain their thinking to other programmers by taking apart their code. Tangible materials like 3D puzzles challenge students to demonstrate their learning using novel tools. As students take what they learned through hands-on activities and represent those concepts in code, their understanding deepens and computational thinking skills are strengthened.

How can empathy lead to better prototyping?

Have you ever heard people complain about processes such as boarding an airplane efficiently, choosing a fast-moving check-out line at the store, or getting in and out of a crowded bathroom quickly during passing periods at school?  How could you redesign one of those experiences to make it more positive for the user? Engineers and designers use Design Thinking to develop products that address user needs, but that same process can also be used to design and redesign user experiences. Combining empathy, ideation, prototyping and testing, students gain experience with identifying and addressing problems experienced by those around them. Students conduct interviews and research, and apply creative problem solving and determination to develop their own prototype of an improved user experience project of their choosing.
