Cathy Coughlin STEM Scholars
A Legacy of Big Dreams for Future STEM Stars
A Legacy of Big Dreams for Future STEM Stars
When Cathy M. Coughlin, a Northwestern University graduate and member of the Board of Trustees, passed away in 2015, she left a legacy of success grounded in hard work, talent development and passion for learning. Her life and big dreams for bright young women inspired her friends and family members to approach Center for Talent Development about a scholarship program in Cathy's memory.
The Coughlin STEM Scholars was launched in 2015 with its first cohort of five students. Each year five to ten new scholars are selected, based on availability of funds. Scholars are young people in grade 6 from the Chicagoland area with a strong interest and ability in STEM areas. They participate in the program through grade eight and are provided enrichment and accelerated summer and academic year programming focused on STEM subjects.
This brief video presents the purpose and outcomes of the Coughlin STEM Scholars Program, drawing from student experiences, CTD's talent development model, and the vision of Cathy Coughlin and her friends and family. As Scholars, students participate in a wide range of challenging STEM courses from Aerospace Engineering to Introduction to Biomedicine and have the opportunity to live on Northwestern's Evanston, Illinois campus in CTD's residential summer program.
All of these experiences are possible because of donors to the Coughlin STEM Scholars fund.
What are the benefits do students identify? What would scholars tell a friend about the program?
In this brief video, two Coughlin STEM Scholars talk about their experience with the program and why they value the opportunities it has provided.
